Chords of Unity
Day before yesterday I performed at a community choral concert, a celebration of Celtic song. I played a few flute decorations among the choral arrangements and was also invited to perform a solo. This was a perfect occasion for me to bring out my toys! The crystal flute and pennywhistle both made an appearance for some simple tunes. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the whole show and even my little jigs. I’ve been practicing the flute now for nearly 30 years and honing my skills as a performer. It amazes me that after all this and getting to play some of the “big” repertoire and aiming to get “there” as a musician that it was my little jigs and soulful crystal flute that elicited such delight from an audience.
The whole concert was really quite successful, largely in part to my conductor colleague, but really I think because we find such honesty, simplicity and meaning in folk music. Hats off also to community music groups which bring together the young, the old and the diversity of humanity with a sound. We are all united by the melodies which we create, the meanings they define for us, and the memories they perpetuate.
